About Us
The Southampton University Wing Chun Club (SUWCC) is the official Wing Chun club of the Athletic Union at the University of Southampton.
Wing Chun(詠春) is a system of martial arts that is very different from most other martial art forms. It is based on the economy of motion and expends the most force using the least effort. The fundamental principles of Wing Chun include structure, angles and the Centreline theory. Punches and kicks are delivered over the shortest distance possible. The art was popularised by Ip Man(葉問), a Grandmaster who taught Wing Chun to some of the best Wing Chun practitioners of his time. One of Ip Man's most famous students was Bruce Lee, a popular martial arts actor. Lee went on to develop Jeet Kun Do, a martial arts philosophy, under the inspiration of Wing Chun. Wing Chun is also very suitable for both men and women of varying height and bodily structures.
The SUWCC is in partnership with the Wing Chun Federation. The Wing Chun Federation's Head Instructor, Alan Gibson is a globally renowned Wing Chun practitioner who founded the Wing Chun Federation and author of several best selling books on Wing Chun. Alan Gibson teaches Wing Chun in accordance to Wong Shun Leung, one of Ip Man's most senior and foremost students. Wong Shun Leung is one of the most respected authority of Wing Chun who continued to train Bruce Lee after Ip Man's death. Alan Gibson and his assistant Tom Devon teaches regularly in the University of Southampton.
The SUWCC hopes to create awareness of Wing Chun among the University students and is inviting interested students to participate in the club's training sessions.
